In today's machines and systems, by far the most used drive is the 3-phase current asynchronous motor. This motor is usually switched directly in a power range up to 5.5 kW, and above that range with the help of a star delta starter. Drive elements and connected processing machines are frequently subject to jerking at the moment of start-up, overloading them. Workpieces and conveyed materials can also be damaged. Softstarter devices are the ideal solution to such problems. Phase gating of the supply voltage allows them to slowly increase motor voltage. The torque produced by the motor builds up generally, ensuring a jerk-free and gentle start. This reduces wear and increases the service life of the entire system.


The need for more safety in industrial machines demands reliable braking systems. Besides the aspect of safety, however, economic considerations often play a role in brake system purchases. By quickly shutting down hazardous machine components, braking devices avoid both work accidents and machine damage. This is why they are required for various machines and systems under the Accident Prevention Regulations (UVV), for example in the lumber and textile industries. In addition, braking systems also help reduce costs by shortening machine deceleration times. Three phase asynchronous motors are primarily used in current drive technology. They can be braked both mechanically and electrically.


Braking devices are often used in combination with Softstart devices to increase the service lives of 3-phase motors. They also allow drive components to be designed in a more inexpensive way, and can be installed as retrofit components in existing systems, like braking devices. Softstart devices with integrated braking function significantly reduce wiring work, in addition to the two control functions.
